(MENAFN) US Border Patrol agents came under fire from suspected Mexican cartel members in southern Texas during an attempted illegal border crossing. The incident took place near Fronton, Texas, where agents were confronted by gunmen as a group of illegal immigrants attempted to cross the Rio Grande. Border Patrol returned fire, but no injuries were reported on either side, and the group did not succeed in crossing.
Texas Department of Public Safety officials confirmed that the Mexican military had deployed armored vehicles on the other side of the border, providing surveillance via drones. Cartel activity is common in this region, with several criminal organizations, including the Gulf Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, operating in the area.
The shooting comes amid increased tensions at the border, as President Donald Trump declared a national emergency and ordered military deployments to border crossings, alongside efforts to deport millions of undocumented immigrants. Trump has also directed the US government to prepare for designating Mexican cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.
