(MENAFN) European Union officials are growing increasingly uneasy about the US administration under President Donald Trump, feeling that the White House is less interested in engaging with Brussels. Tensions between the US and EU have escalated, with trump making threats regarding trade tariffs and even annexing Greenland. Politico reports that since Trump's second term began on January 20, the lack of communication has come as a “cold shower” for EU officials, contrasting with the more positive relationship they had with President Joe Biden’s administration.
EU’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, reached out to new US Secretary of State Marco Rubio for a meeting in Brussels, but has not received a response. This lack of communication, alongside the absence of high-level EU representatives at Trump’s inauguration, underscores growing frustration with the US administration. While some European leaders, such as Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, have been in contact with the US, there’s a sense that the EU is being sidelined in favor of direct interactions with national leaders.
The EU has been anticipating potential trade restrictions, particularly after Trump’s threats to impose tariffs on EU companies unless certain conditions are met, including reducing the trade deficit by purchasing more US oil and gas. Another point of contention is Greenland, which Trump has expressed interest in due to its strategic location, even suggesting the possibility of using military force to acquire it. This has caused anxiety in Denmark and heightened tensions with the EU.
