Turkmenistan's Prioritizes Growing North-South And West-East Corridors - President

(MENAFN- Trend News Agency) ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan, September 25. The most important task for Turkmenistan is to expand the infrastructure of transport and transit corridors in the directions of North-South and West-East, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov said at a meeting of the People's Council, Trend reports via Turkmenistan's official media.

“Our priority is to expand the infrastructure of transport and transit corridors along the North-South and West-East routes. Here we are doing everything necessary to develop the transport corridor China-Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran and increase the volume of cargo transportation,” the head of state said.

The President also noted that an important role is playing in the formation of an international multimodal transport corridor from the Asia-Pacific region to Europe.

“Comprehensive reforms are being implemented in the transport and communication sector of the country, including those designed to promote the revival in a new format of the ancient trade route - the Great Silk Road. At the same time, efforts are being made to intensify passenger and cargo transportation by all types of transport to fully utilize the international transport and transit potential,” he said.

According to the head of state, in this context, the country cooperates with a number of major international organizations, including the UN, which confirms Turkmenistan's aspiration to become an important hub in the global transportation network.

To note, Turkmenistan actively participates in the development of North-South and West-East transport corridors, which increases its role in regional logistics. Turkmenistan, together with Russia, Kazakhstan, and Iran, signed a roadmap in July 2024 to promote the eastern branch of the North-South corridor. The initiative aims to increase the capacity of the corridor to 15 million tons per year by 2027 and 20 million tons by 2030.

The corridor is designed to provide efficient multimodal transport routes linking the Indian Ocean with the Caspian and Baltic Seas, significantly reducing transit costs and time compared to traditional routes.
