Doha, Qatar: Under its annual medical convoys program, the representation mission of Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) in Turkey has implemented a medical convoy for displaced Syrians in Idlib, northern Syria, at a total cost of $62,444 (QR 227,610).

The purpose of the project was to reduce mortality and morbidity rates resulting from the lack of specialized health care services, as well as to improve the quality of life for patients in need of specialized surgical interventions.

To that end, a volunteering medical delegation was deployed from Qatar to perform examinations and surgeries. It comprised Dr. Abdullah Al Naimi (Consultant Urologist and the team leader) and Dr. Hashem Makki (Resident Urologist) from Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and Dr. Mansour Ahmed Jaber (Consultant Pediatric Surgeon and Executive Head of Surgery Department) and Dr. Hassan Baghazal (Consultant Paediatric Surgeon) from Sidra Medicine.

During their stay in Syria, the medical delegation treated 92 patients. With a capacity-building program for local surgeons and medical equipment provided for hospitals, the number of direct beneficiaries increased to 435 patients, in addition to 2,175 indirect beneficiaries.

The project involved 47 medical consultations and 29 pediatric and urology surgeries by the delegation, training for 12 Syrian urologists and four paediatric surgeons, group discussions and theoretical lectures on modern surgical techniques, and procurement of medical supplies and equipment to the host hospitals.

Thanks to the training and guidance by the Qatari medical team, the local doctors performed 249 medical consultations and 94 surgeries.

In coordination with the Idlib Health Directorate, the project's team selected two hospitals to perform the surgeries, identified the most needed specializations, made a list of necessary surgical tools and medical supplies for the major procedures required, purchased them by a public tender, and made the list of beneficiaries and timetable.

The specialized medical convoys scheme in Syria is part of the emergency and life-saving medical response program, especially after the devastating earthquake in southern Turkey and northern Syria early last year.

It is designed to give the most affected people access to the specialized surgical services not available in northwestern Syria or inaccessible in southern Turkey due to high costs or long waiting lists.
