Major US stock exchanges show losses at Monday’s end

(MENAFN) On Monday, major US stock exchanges ended the trading day with little change, reflecting a mostly flat performance across the board. The Dow Jones Industrial Average saw a minor decline of 49 points, or 0.12 percent, closing at 40,539. The S&P 500 experienced a slight gain, adding just four points, or 0.08 percent, to finish at 5,463. Meanwhile, the nasdaq Composite rose by a modest 12 points, or 0.07 percent, ending the session at 17,370.

The VIX volatility index, often referred to as the "fear index," increased by 1.3 percent to 16.60, indicating a slight rise in market uncertainty. In contrast, the 10-year US Treasury yield edged down by 0.06 percent to 4.176 percent, reflecting a minor decrease in long-term interest rates.

In the currency markets, the dollar index rose by 0.25 percent to 104.58, while the euro depreciated by 0.33 percent against the dollar, trading at USD1.0821. This movement in the currency markets highlights a strengthening of the US dollar relative to the euro.

Precious metals saw declines, with gold prices falling by 0.16 percent to USD2,383 per ounce, and silver decreasing by 0.2 percent to USD27.87. In the oil markets, prices were down approximately 1.4 percent, with Brent crude, the global benchmark, priced at USD79.10 per barrel, and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at USD75.89 per barrel. This decrease in oil prices reflects a broader trend of falling commodity values on the day.
