Nicolas Maduro wins Venezuela’s presidential election with 51 percent of vote

(MENAFN) On Friday, Nicolas Maduro, at 61 years old, was declared the winner of Venezuela’s presidential election with 51 percent of the vote, according to the National Electoral Council (CNE). His main opponent, Edmundo Gonzalez, received 44 percent of the vote. The results, based on returns from 80 percent of the voting stations, were announced early Monday by Elvis Amoroso, head of the electoral authority.

In his victory speech, Maduro pledged that his reelection would usher in peace for Venezuela, emphasizing that fascism would not take root in the country. “The voice of peace triumphed, and in Venezuela there will be peace, peace and peace for our country,” Maduro asserted.

The opposition, led by Maria Corina Machado, has rejected the official results, calling them an "outrage against the truth." They argue that the CNE's results do not align with the votes cast, citing exit polls from the day that indicated a victory for Gonzalez. The opposition has also criticized the six-hour delay in the release of official results. Machado claimed Gonzalez won 70 percent of the vote and insisted that the data collected and reported supports their position.

International reactions have been critical, with several countries including the US, Brazil, Argentina, and Chile calling for free and fair elections in Venezuela. Following the announcement, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed “serious concerns” about the accuracy of the election results, suggesting that they do not reflect the will of the Venezuelan people.
