Israeli attack on military watchtower in Lebanon injures 2 soldiers

(MENAFN) On Sunday, two Lebanese soldiers sustained injuries from an Israeli attack targeting a military watchtower in the southwestern border region of Lebanon. According to the Lebanese army Command, the strike struck the watchtower situated outside the village of Alma al-Shaab. The injured soldiers were swiftly evacuated and transported to a hospital for medical treatment. The army did not provide specific details about their condition but indicated that their injuries were moderate.

Military sources, who spoke anonymously to Xinhua, reported that an Israeli Merkava tank fired a shell directly at the watchtower. This direct hit caused substantial damage to the watchtower and resulted in the injuries of the two soldiers. The Lebanese Army Command has requested an immediate investigation by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) to assess the circumstances surrounding the attack and determine accountability.

In response to the Israeli strike, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for launching counterattacks against Israeli military positions. The Lebanese militant group reported that it targeted the Israeli military's Zarit barracks with artillery shells. Additionally, Hezbollah stated that it had carried out attacks on the Israeli Northern Corps command headquarters at Ein Zeitim base and on soldiers stationed in the Israeli kibbutz of Hanita using Katyusha rockets, which resulted in casualties among Israeli forces.

This escalation of hostilities follows a significant increase in tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border. On October 8, 2023, Hezbollah launched a rocket barrage in solidarity with Hamas, which had attacked Israel the previous day. In retaliation, Israel responded with heavy artillery fire directed at southeastern Lebanon. The ongoing conflict underscores the fragile security situation in the region and the volatility of cross-border interactions between Lebanon and Israel.
