(MENAFN) On Sunday, a tragic incident occurred at an oil-drilling installation in southeastern Turkiye, resulting in the death of 1 worker and injuries to 2 others. The collapse happened at a drilling site located in the Mount Gabar area of Sirnak province, which is predominantly Kurdish.

As reported by local authorities, the accident involved the sudden collapse of the installation, leading to significant debris. Provincial Governor Cevdet Atay, who visited the site, reported that an engineer was killed when he became trapped under the debris. Rescue operations were promptly initiated, leading to the immediate extraction of another driller who was trapped as well. This individual was airlifted to a hospital by helicopter, which reflects the urgent response to the situation. Fortunately, a third worker survived with only minor injuries.

In response to the incident, an investigation has been launched to determine the causes of the collapse and to assess any potential safety lapses. The Turkish Petroleum Corporation, which began drilling operations in the region in 2022, is expected to cooperate fully with the investigation. The accident points out the risks associated with oil drilling activities as well as the importance of stringent safety measures to protect workers in such high-risk environments.
