Meta delays rollout of generative AI interface in Europe due to regulatory uncertainty

(MENAFN) Meta has announced the indefinite postponement of its new generative AI interface for European users, citing an “unclear” EU regulatory framework as the primary reason. The planned program, an advanced iteration of the "Lama3" system named "Multimodal," is designed to integrate and create text, images, and maps across Meta’s platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp.

Originally anticipated to roll out in the coming months, Meta has now chosen to withhold the launch in the European Union. The company explained to Agence France-Presse that the delay is due to uncertainties surrounding the EU’s regulatory environment. In late May, the European Union's 27 member states approved a pioneering regulation on artificial intelligence, which will come into effect in 2026. This legislation aims to foster innovation while mitigating the risks associated with AI misuse.

Meta’s decision to postpone the launch is largely influenced by concerns related to the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The company highlighted its uncertainty about how Europe interprets GDPR in the context of using publicly available data published on the internet, which is crucial for developing AI language models. In contrast, Meta reported receiving clear regulatory guidance from the UK, where the framework is similar to GDPR, allowing them to proceed with their plans there.

By delaying the release of its AI interface, Meta is following a strategy similar to that of other major tech companies, which have also opted to navigate the complexities of regulatory landscapes before advancing their technological innovations.
