Fonseka To Announce Candidacy For President In August

Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka is to announce his candidacy for President at a media conference in early August, his advisors said.
Fonseka's Senior Advisor and Chief Strategist Jagana Krishnakumar and Venkatesh Tharmarajah, Strategic Advisor to Fonseka said that a formal announcement will be made between 7th and 9th August.
They confirmed that Fonseka will contest as a non-party independent people's candidate.
The advisors said that Fonseka will be backed by a number of MPs, former MPs and prominent personalities.
Asked why there was a delay in the announcement as Fonseka was expected to announce his candidacy earlier, the two advisors said that certain matters were being finalised before the formal announcement.
Daily Mirror reported earlier that Fonseka will contest and face-off against incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Leader Sajith Premadasa and NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
In a recent interview with Daily Mirror, Fonseka said that he will not back Premadasa for President.
He also said that he will not support Wickremesinghe as the President was working with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP). (Colombo Gazette)
