The Silent Struggle: Postpartum Depression's Toll On New Mothers

(MENAFN- Tribal News Network) Bringing a child into the world and raising them well might be one of the toughest jobs in existence. A mother undergoes not only physical but also mental transformations to bring a child into this world. A woman, who once only thought about herself, finds all her energy involuntarily devoted to her child, often leaving no time for herself.

Motherhood brings immense responsibility. Many women feel overwhelmed after childbirth, fearing they won't be able to handle this new role properly, leading to postpartum depression. This was the case for Nayab after her child was born.

Nayab shared that she didn't feel the joy she expected when her baby arrived: "I couldn't take care of my baby and felt sad all the time. When I was alone with my baby, I sometimes felt like hurting him. This made me feel ashamed, and I would cry. When I told my husband, he dismissed it, saying it was just mental exhaustion and that my bad mood was due to lack of sleep. He assured me it was a temporary issue that would resolve on its own."

seeing Nayab's behavior, her in-laws often remarked that she wasn't the only woman to have given birth. They pointed out that all women have children, yet none of them look as dejected as she did. These comments worsened Nayab's condition, deepening her depression and leaving her in tears most of the time.

This situation persisted until Nayab consulted her gynecologist due to some health issues and disclosed her feelings. The doctor diagnosed her with postpartum depression and strongly advised her husband to take good care of her. However, the women in her family still dismiss her struggles, saying they've had children too but never acted out in this way.

Many people, like Nayab and her family, are unaware of this condition. Postpartum depression can start right after childbirth and last for some time. Women who have previously experienced depression or mental stress during pregnancy are at a higher risk. The severity can vary, with some experiencing mild symptoms and others severe. In severe cases, doctors may prescribe medication, but generally, the support and understanding of family members, especially the husband, are crucial for recovery.

A woman goes through numerous challenges before and after bringing a child into the world. Therefore, her family, especially her husband, should ensure her physical health and mental well-being, ensuring both mother and child are healthy.
