(MENAFN) United States Senator Bob Menendez has been found guilty of bribery, fraud, and acting as a foreign agent, potentially facing decades in prison following a conviction by a New York jury. The jury returned a verdict on Tuesday, convicting Menendez on all 16 counts, which include bribery, wire fraud, extortion, conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and acting as a foreign agent. Alongside Menendez, two New Jersey businessmen, Wael Hana and Fred Daibes, were also convicted on multiple charges, while a third businessman, Jose Uribe, had previously pleaded guilty and provided testimony against the senator during the trial.
Menendez's wife, Nadine Menendez, was indicted with him last year and is awaiting trial after completing treatment for breast cancer. Prosecutors alleged that the Menendez couple accepted "hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes" in exchange for the senator leveraging his influence to benefit a foreign state actor, specifically Egypt, between 2018 and 2022. The indictment detailed a series of bribes that included cash envelopes, gold bars, a Mercedes-Benz convertible, and a no-show job for Nadine.
In return for these bribes, Menendez reportedly used his position on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to lift a "hold" on United States military aid to Egypt, provided sensitive government information to Daibes, and pressured prosecutors to investigate several competitors in Hana's Halal meat business.
Federal prosecutor Paul Monteleoni, during his closing arguments, emphasized the extent of Menendez's ambition, stating, “It wasn’t enough for him to be one of the most powerful people in Washington. Robert Menendez wanted all that power and he also wanted to use it to pile up riches for himself and his wife.” This case highlights serious ethical concerns within the realm of political power and the lengths some officials may go to in pursuit of personal gain.
