Biden justifies ‘put Trump in bullseye’ comment

(MENAFN) US President Joe Biden has defended his recent remark about putting Donald trump "in a bullseye," rejecting any suggestion that it might have incited violence. Biden explained that his comment was aimed at redirecting attention from his own lackluster performance during a television debate to his Republican rival's statements and policies.

This defense comes in the wake of a shooting incident on Saturday, where a gunman opened fire at Trump while he was speaking at an outdoor rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The attack resulted in a bullet grazing Trump's right ear, the death of one spectator, and injuries to two others before Secret Service agents fatally shot the assailant.

Biden has consistently characterized Trump as a threat to democracy and the nation. Earlier this month, he told donors, "We’re done talking about the debate; it’s time to put Trump in a bullseye." Following the assassination attempt, several commentators argued that such rhetoric may have contributed to the violence.

In a Monday interview with NBC News anchor Lester Holt, Biden insisted that his use of the term "bullseye" was a "mistake" and merely a figurative expression. “I didn’t say ‘crosshairs.’ I meant ‘bullseye,’” he clarified. Biden emphasized that his intention was to focus public attention on Trump’s actions and policies, as well as the numerous falsehoods he claimed during the debate.

He further distanced himself from violent rhetoric, stating, “I am not the guy that said I want to be a dictator on day one. I am not the guy that refused to accept the outcome of the election.” As tensions continue to rise in the political landscape, Biden’s comments reflect the ongoing struggle between the two parties as they navigate a deeply divided nation.
