US plans to withdraw around 1,000 military personnel from Niger

(MENAFN) The United States is proceeding with plans to withdraw nearly 1,000 military personnel from Niger, with a target completion date set for September 15, as confirmed by the Pentagon on Monday.

According to Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh, the current number of US forces stationed in Niger is approximately 300. Singh emphasized that the withdrawal is being conducted in a manner that is both safe and orderly, adhering to the timeline previously outlined.

Singh also noted that the US had successfully completed its withdrawal from Air Base 101, located in Niamey, the capital of Niger, on July 7. This development marks a significant shift in US military presence in the region, particularly following Niger's decision to terminate its long-standing military agreement with the United States earlier this year.

The Nigerien government, represented by spokesman Amadou Abdramane, characterized the presence of US troops and contractors as "illegal," citing a lack of democratic approval and unfavorable conditions associated with their presence.

The government expressed concerns regarding transparency in military activities, which contributed to their decision to demand the withdrawal of US forces from their territory. This evolving situation highlights the complexities of international military agreements and the implications of shifting political landscapes in West Africa.
