China's largest natural uranium production project begins in inland Mongolia

(MENAFN) China has announced the commencement of construction on its largest natural uranium production project in Ordos, located in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. This project, part of the nuclear industry development plan by the China Nuclear Power Corporation, is being developed by the China National Nuclear Corporation. It aims to establish a state-of-the-art natural uranium production base that adheres to the highest standards of green, economic, intelligent, and efficient processes.

The project will utilize an advanced mining method that employs carbon dioxide and oxygen as filtration agents, a departure from traditional underground mining techniques. This innovative technology allows for the extraction of uranium through a closed-loop circulation system without bringing the ores to the surface for processing. This method ensures zero emissions of water, gas, and solid waste, promoting sustainable and low-carbon operations. Furthermore, the project will integrate cutting-edge technologies such as automation, centralized remote control, and big data analysis to enable intelligent operational analysis and precision mining.

Upon completion, the project is expected to significantly enhance China's natural uranium supply capacity, boost the natural uranium industry's independent innovation capabilities, and increase its international competitiveness. Natural uranium is a critical strategic energy resource for China's national security and the foundation for the development of its nuclear industry. In 2023, China's nuclear power generation capacity on the mainland is projected to reach 440,000 GWh, accounting for approximately 5% of the country's total electricity generation. China has also developed a comprehensive and self-reliant nuclear industry chain system, ensuring a stable and secure supply of nuclear fuel.
