Biden: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to receive Secret Service protection after Trump assassination attempt

(MENAFN) The Biden administration announced on Monday that independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will receive Secret Service protection following the recent attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. During a White House press briefing, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas stated, "In light of this weekend's events, the president has directed me to work with the Secret Service to provide protection to Robert Kennedy Jr."

Mayorkas also emphasized that the Secret Service had already enhanced Trump’s protection both before and after the assassination attempt due to the "evolving nature of threats" against the former president. This decision comes amid growing concerns for the safety of political figures, particularly following Trump’s own targeting.

Trump himself joined the call for Kennedy to be afforded Secret Service protection, expressing his belief on his Truth Social platform that it is "imperative" for Kennedy to receive such security. He pointed out the historical context, stating, "Given the history of the Kennedy Family, this is the obvious right thing to do!" This remark is particularly poignant considering that Kennedy’s uncle, President John F. Kennedy, was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, in November 1963. Additionally, his brother, Robert F. Kennedy, was also assassinated in June 1968 in Los Angeles, shortly after winning the California and South Dakota Democratic presidential primaries.

In a related development, a US news agency reported that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. met with Trump in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Monday, where they discussed themes of "national unity" as the Republican National Convention commenced. Meanwhile, the FBI has announced that it is investigating the shooting that occurred during Trump’s campaign rally in Pennsylvania as a "potential domestic terrorism act," highlighting the serious and escalating concerns surrounding political violence in the current climate.
