Orban takes trip to Russia

(MENAFN) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has landed in Moscow, marking a significant move in his efforts to mediate peace in the ongoing Ukraine conflict. Orban's visit, described by his press secretary Bertalan Havasi as part of a peacekeeping mission, comes amidst controversy and criticism from several high-ranking European Union officials, including European Council President Charles Michel, who asserted that Hungary lacks the mandate to engage with Russia on behalf of the European Union during its current European Union presidency.

Undeterred by these criticisms, Orban has reiterated that his discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin are not formal negotiations but rather part of Hungary's independent efforts to promote peace. Addressing concerns over Hungary's limited political influence, Orban emphasized his belief in Hungary's potential role as a facilitator for peace initiatives, stating, "We can be a good tool in the hands of God, we can be a good tool in the hands of people who want peace."

In a statement to Kossuth Radio, Orban outlined his objectives for the visit, expressing hope to persuade both Ukraine and Russia to embark on a collaborative journey towards achieving a ceasefire and initiating substantive peace talks. His visit to Moscow follows a recent trip to Kiev, where he urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to consider an immediate ceasefire as a crucial step towards resolving the conflict.

Orban's diplomatic maneuvers highlight Hungary's evolving role in international affairs and its willingness to engage directly with key stakeholders to address regional conflicts. As he engages in discussions with Putin, the outcomes of these talks could potentially influence broader European Union policies towards Eastern Europe and shape future diplomatic strategies within the region.
