Corbyn wins over previous party in British election

(MENAFN) Jeremy Corbyn, former leader of the Labour Party, has emerged victorious in Thursday's United Kingdom general election after contesting as an independent candidate in London's Islington North constituency. Corbyn secured 24,120 votes, surpassing his Labour rival Praful Nargund, who received 16,873 votes. Voter turnout stood at 67.5percent, slightly lower than the 2019 figures, according to The Guardian's report on Friday.

At 75 years old, Corbyn has served as the Member of Parliament for Islington North since 1983. Known for his advocacy of Palestinian rights and a staunch anti-austerity and anti-war stance, he led the Labour Party from 2015 to 2020. However, his leadership tenure was marred by controversies over allegations of anti-Semitism, which led to his suspension and subsequent expulsion from the party in May after he announced his decision to campaign as an independent candidate.

Corbyn has consistently defended himself against allegations of anti-Semitism, describing them as politically motivated exaggerations. Supporters contend that he fell victim to a smear campaign orchestrated by internal party rivals opposed to his progressive policies.

Following his victory, Corbyn expressed gratitude to the constituents of Islington North, stating that their support for him for the 11th consecutive term demonstrates the positive impact of inclusive and compassionate politics. He praised his campaign team for their efforts in achieving the electoral success.

Corbyn's win as an independent candidate signifies a significant chapter in his political career, highlighting ongoing support from his constituency despite his departure from the Labour Party. His continued presence in parliament promises to uphold his longstanding advocacy for social justice and progressive causes.
