Global air passenger demand surges by 10.7 percent in May

(MENAFN) In May, global air passenger demand surged by 10.7 percent compared to the previous year, marking a robust recovery in the Aviation sector. According to recent data from the International Air transport Association (IATA), airlines achieved a record high seat occupancy rate of 83.4 percent, reflecting strong consumer confidence and increasing travel activity.

The total capacity for air passengers, measured in available seat kilometers, also grew significantly by 8.5 percent year-on-year. This expansion in capacity underscores the industry's efforts to meet rising demand amidst recovering global economies.

"As ticket sales for early peak-season travel in May soared by nearly 6 percent, the upward trajectory in air travel shows no signs of slowing down," remarked IATA Director General Willie Walsh, highlighting the sustained momentum in the market.

International air traffic particularly saw robust growth, surging by 14.6 percent from the previous May across all regions. This increase was supported by a corresponding 14.1 percent rise in international flight capacity, leading to an improved load factor of 82.8 percent for the month.

Meanwhile, domestic passenger demand also saw a notable uptick, rising by 4.7 percent year-on-year, although domestic capacity growth was more subdued at 0.1 percent. This mixed performance between international and domestic sectors underscores the varied pace of recovery in different markets.

Overall, the May data from IATA underscores a buoyant recovery in global air travel, driven by strong consumer demand and increasing confidence in travel safety measures amid the ongoing pandemic recovery efforts.
