Anti-Semitism bursts in France

(MENAFN) In its latest annual report, the National Consultative Commission on Human Rights (CNCDH) has sounded a grave alarm over the escalating wave of racism, anti-Semitism, and xenophobia in France. The report, published recently, reveals disturbing statistics showing a significant uptick in hate crimes throughout 2023. Racist incidents surged by a staggering 32 percent, while anti-Semitic acts experienced an unprecedented 284 percent increase, according to data from the Interior Ministry.

The CNCDH attributes this disturbing trend to several factors, including heightened tensions stemming from Israel’s military actions against Hamas in Gaza and polarizing debates surrounding France’s immigration and asylum policies. The commission underscores that such acts often spike during periods of international conflict involving Israel and Palestinian territories.

Marie Burguburu, president of CNCDH, has criticized the government for what she perceives as a slow response in implementing effective measures to curb racist acts. The report also sheds light on a concerning statistic: despite approximately 1 million people reportedly experiencing racist attacks last year, only a mere 4 percent filed formal complaints.

This report comes at a critical juncture for France, with legislative elections imminent and political discourse increasingly influenced by issues of immigration and national identity. As France prepares for the upcoming elections, where the right-leaning National Rally party is expected to perform strongly with its Euroskeptic and anti-immigration platform, the CNCDH’s findings underscore the urgent need for concerted efforts to address rising intolerance and hate in the country.
