Polling Stations Close In Iran's Snap Presidential Election

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) TEHRAN, June 28 (KUNA) -- Polling stations in Iran's snap presidential election closed at mid night after extending the time of balloting for six hours, announced the electoral commission spokesperson.
Mohsen Eslami said in a statement that the vote counting started immediately after closing the polling stations.
59,000 polling stations across the country opened at 8 a.m. local time to host more than 61 million eligible voters.
Four candidates are competing, including current parliament speaker Mohammad Ghalibaf, Khamenei's representative Saeed Jalili, former Minister of interior Mostafa Pourmohammadi and reform candidate Masoud Pezeshkian.
The early election follows the vacancy of the presidency post after president Ebrahim Raisi's death in a helicopter crash on May 19 along with his entourage. (end)
