Qatar Presides Over Joint Advisory Group Of International Trade Centre

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) HE Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva Hend bint Abdalrahman Al Muftah has assumed the presidency of the fifty-eighth annual session of the Joint Advisory Group (JAG) of the International Trade Centre (2024-2025).
During the convening of JAG's at the headquarters of the World Trade Organization (WTO) on Tuesday, Her Excellency delivered remarks in which she thanked HE Head of the Permanent Mission of Canada in Geneva, Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the WTO Nadia Theodore for superbly presiding over the fifty-seventh annual session of the JAG.
Her Excellency also thanked HE Director-General of WTO Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, HE Secretary-general of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Rebeca Grynspan and HE Executive Director of the International Trade Centre (ITC) Pamela Coke-Hamilton.
HE Al Muftah expressed the State of Qatar's appreciation for the significant activities of JAG and ITC, as the latter continues to upgrade its performance and achieve tangible results for the small and medium -sized enterprises (SMEs), in addition to addressing its fragility, affirming that such a work represents foremost priority for the State of Qatar.
Her Excellency outlined the ITCs initiatives in helping SMEs's activities in the Middle East region. And she congratulated the ITC for the accomplished outcomes and projects it achieved throughout the past year, as set out in the annual report, underscoring the fact that ITC is moving on the right track to implement its strategic plan 2022-2025, underlining her readiness to operate with JAG during the forthcoming period to follow up on this stellar work.
In 2023, the State of Qatar hosted the Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) in collaboration with ITC, where representatives of the international community converged to support the least developed countries on the path towards prosperity.
So far, ITC has been striving to support SMEs in 144 states, while the three-quarters of these countries were being prioritized, including the least developed countries, non-coastal developing countries, small island developing states, as well as small and vulnerable economies.
The Joint Advisory Group (JAG) of the International Trade Centre is a joint authority between WTO and UNCTAD. It oversees the ITC's activities, in addition to reviewing its annual reports with the aim of maintaining transparency in ITC's operations worldwide.
Additionally, JAG submits recommendations to the UNCTAD's Trade and Development Board and the WTO's Committee on Trade and Development (CTD) on ITC's work program. And representatives of member state governments in UNCTAD and members of the WTO participate in the JAG's meetings and are typically represented at the ambassadorial or senior official level.
