US intends on monitoring Russian Naval activities near Cuba

(MENAFN) According to reports from CBS News, the United States is set to deploy American ships to track Russian warships, including a nuclear submarine, off the coast of Cuba this week. Citing unnamed United States officials, CBS revealed that the Russian naval detachment, comprising the frigate Admiral Gorshkov, nuclear-powered submarine Kazan, oil tanker Pashin, and salvage tug Nikolay Chiker, is scheduled to make an official visit to Cuba from Wednesday until the following Monday, as announced by Havana's Foreign Ministry last week.

In response to this Russian naval presence, two United States Navy destroyers along with two vessels equipped with sonar technology have been tasked with trailing the Russian submarine, while another destroyer and a US Coast Guard cutter are shadowing the remainder of the Russian Navy detachment, as reported by CBS.

Furthermore, Moscow's intentions extend beyond the diplomatic visit, with plans for a series of air and naval exercises in the Caribbean in the weeks following the naval visit. These exercises mark the first instance of simultaneous air and sea drills conducted by Russia in the region since 2019, as indicated by another United States official cited by CBS. The maneuvers are slated to occur throughout the summer preceding a global naval exercise scheduled for autumn.

In response to these developments, White House National Security Communications Adviser John Kirby remarked to CBS that the Russian naval visit and subsequent exercises are likely a response to American actions concerning the conflict in Ukraine. Kirby emphasized that the United States will closely monitor the situation, asserting that while the presence of nuclear weapons is not anticipated, vigilance is warranted given the heightened tensions.

As tensions between the United States and Russia persist amidst geopolitical maneuvering, the monitoring of Russian naval activity near Cuba underscores the delicate balance of power in the region and the potential implications for broader international relations.
