Bosnian Serb president commits to his stand on Russian sanctions

(MENAFN) President Milorad Dodik of Republika Srpska, a constituent entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, reiterated his refusal to support Western sanctions against Russia amidst ongoing conflict with Ukraine. Dodik emphasized this stance in an interview with RIA Novosti, stating that Republika Srpska would not comply with Washington's persistent demands for sanctions.

The current leader has consistently maintained this position throughout the Ukraine conflict, citing the Dayton Agreement of 1995, which established Bosnia and Herzegovina as a nation comprising the majority-Muslim Bosniak-Croat Federation and Republika Srpska. As per the agreement, Bosnia and Herzegovina operates under a tripartite presidency, representing Bosniaks, Serbs, and Croats. Any decision to impose sanctions on Russia requires consent from all segments of the country, including the Serbian part.

Dodik expressed frustration with the lack of consultation from American officials, criticizing their unilateral decision-making regarding Bosnia and Herzegovina's stance on Russia sanctions. He highlighted the pressure exerted by the United States to endorse sanctions while disregarding the perspectives of Bosnian leaders.

Despite multiple rounds of sanctions imposed by the United States, European Union, and their allies on Russia, Dodik stressed that there has been no official decision at the national level in Bosnia and Herzegovina to support such measures against Moscow. This firm stance underscores the complexity of international relations within Bosnia and Herzegovina and the ongoing challenges in reaching consensus on foreign policy matters.
