European Commission Urges Member States To Allocate Maritime Space For Offshore Wind Projects

(MENAFN- Trend News Agency) BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 13. The EuropeanCommission has urged its member states to allocate maritime spacefor offshore wind projects, Trend reports with reference to the Recommendation andguidance on speeding up permit-granting for renewable energy andrelated infrastructure projects.

“As it is urgent to accelerate the deployment of renewableenergy projects, member states should start as soon as possible toidentify suitable land and sea areas and to prepare plans forparticularly suitable areas ('renewables acceleration areas'), inaccordance with Articles 15b and 15c of Directive (EU)2018/2001.

Dedicated guidance on the designation of renewables accelerationareas has been published alongside this Recommendation, inCommission Staff Working Document SWD (2024) 333. The Commissionencourages all member states that have set national targets foroffshore wind in their national energy and climate plan to identifyand allocate at early stage the necessary maritime space andintegrate it in their maritime spatial plan,” says theCommission.

The European Commission says that permit-granting procedurespose significant barriers that could impede the future deploymentof vital innovative decarbonization technologies necessary forachieving climate neutrality. Introducing regulatorysandboxes-environments for real-life testing of innovativetechnologies, products, services, or approaches not fully compliantwith existing regulations-could foster innovation and pave the wayfor regulatory adjustments to accommodate them. Moreover, ensuringadequate staffing levels and expertise within local and regionalauthorities responsible for environmental assessments andpermit-granting processes, as well as addressing labor and skillshortages, are crucial prerequisites for expediting projectdevelopment and the implementation of renewable energysolutions.
