Cairo Summit for Peace discuss Israeli-Palestinian conflict, humanitarian crisis

(MENAFN) High-ranking officials and world leaders gathered in Egypt for the Cairo Summit for Peace, convened with the primary objective of deescalating the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinians and preventing any potential spillover effects in the broader West Asia region. The summit drew representatives from an array of nations, including Jordan, France, Germany, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, the United States, Qatar, and South Africa. Key international bodies, the United Nations and the European Union, were also in attendance. The central focus of the summit was the formulation of a comprehensive plan to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and rekindle peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

King Abdullah of Jordan was among the leaders who expressed their concerns and condemned Israel's military campaign in Gaza. He characterized the Israeli bombing as a "war crime" and emphasized the need for accountability for those responsible. The king highlighted the indiscriminate nature of the ongoing bombing campaign, asserting that it constitutes a form of collective punishment imposed on a besieged and vulnerable population. King Abdullah underscored that the campaign is a clear violation of international humanitarian law, branding it a war crime. He called for global condemnation and enforcement of accountability, lamenting that such measures appear to be lacking when it comes to Gaza.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, who has faced pressure from Israel and the United States to accept the 2.3 million population of Gaza as refugees, openly rejected such relocation plans. President el-Sisi made his firm stance known, emphasizing Egypt's opposition to any forced transfer of Palestinians to the Sinai Peninsula. He warned that such a move could have dire consequences, potentially transforming the Sinai Peninsula into a launching pad for attacks against Israel. This stance aligns with the broader Egyptian sentiment, reflecting strong opposition to any measure that would forcibly relocate Palestinians to Egyptian territory.
