EU nations to purchase record amounts of LNG in 2023

(MENAFN) Despite their commitment to stop using Russian fuel by 2027, EU nations are expected to purchase record amounts of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia in 2023, according to the most recent research published by Global Witness on Wednesday.

In the first 7 months of 2023, members of the bloc kept on importing a sizable quantity of LNG from Russia, according to statistics.

Since the start of the crisis in Ukraine, the European Union has prohibited imports of Russian seaborne oil and significantly decreased exports of pipeline gas from Moscow. Nevertheless, despite repeated requests from a number of EU representatives, LNG has not yet been approved.

With purchases of 7.5 million cubic meters (mcm) and 7.1 mcm, Belgium as well as Spain were the second- and third-largest buyers overall, with France coming in at number five with 4.5 mcm. China was the top importer of LNG from Russia with 8.7 mcm, followed by Japan with 7 mcm.

“It’s shocking that countries in the EU have worked so hard to wean themselves off piped Russian fossil gas only to replace it with the shipped equivalent,” Jonathan Noronha-Gant, a senior campaigner for Global Witness, stated.
