Doha, Qatar: In recognition of Blood Cancer Awareness Month, the Ministry of Public health (MoPH) and healthcare providers are working to increase awareness of leukemia and other types of blood cancer and the disease's signs and symptoms.

The Ministry and Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) have launched social media campaigns to educate the public.

Awareness messages say that symptoms of the different types vary, and each can have various risk factors. While some types of blood cancer elicit pronounced symptoms, such as loss of appetite or persistent fatigue, others can go unnoticed or be mistaken for something less severe. The same challenge applies to the risk factors as some of the most common, such as age, race, and gender, cannot be controlled or prevented.

The public is encouraged to seek medical attention if they are present with persistent symptoms or to seek more information about blood cancers. They can seek appointments at Primary Health Care Corporation by calling 107 and HMC by contacting the Nesma'ak service on 16060.

According to the Qatar National Cancer Registry (QNCR) at MoPH, leukemia is the most common blood cancer and the third most common of all cancers diagnosed among men in Qatar. It is also the most common cancer diagnosed among children in the country.

The Cancer Care Plan 2023- 2026 data shows that 139 people were diagnosed with leukemia – which is 6.9% of all cancers diagnosed in the country in 2020; also, 79 people were diagnosed with nonhodgkin lymphoma, and it counts to 3.9% among a total number of new cancer patients diagnosed in 2020.

There are three main types of blood cancer: leukemia, multiple myeloma, and lymphomas. Leukemia is a cancer that originates in blood-forming tissue, it is found in the blood and bone marrow and is caused by the overproduction of abnormal white blood cells. Multiple myeloma is a cancer that develops in the bone marrow and affects plasma cells. And Lymphomas are diseases that affect the cells in the lymphatic system. There are dozens of lymphomas, but the disease is primarily categorised as Hodgkin's or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
