Italy Rules Out Military Intervention In Niger

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ROME, Aug 2 (KUNA) -- Italy's Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on Wednesday ruled out any military intervention in Niger and stressed that the Italian forces and the West military units are at the airport.
Speaking to RAI public television, Tajani affirmed putting pressure to restore democracy in Niger, saying that any military intervention will be regarded as a new 'colonization'.
"We have to work so that democracy prevails in Niger ... we need to rule out any Western military initiative because it would be perceived as a new colonisation," Tajani said.
The Italian battalion, which was set to rehabilitate Niger's forces, are not part in the incidents and existing at the airport along with the French, US, Belgian and Germany military units, he noted.
He said that they often work in favor of democracy, indicating that situations may change from a minute to another.
Italy's embassy in Niger is still working at its capacity, he stated.
Nearly 350 military personnel are at Niamey Airport in Niger's capital, 20 of which were evacuated from Niger along with Italian citizens and other foreigners who left the country earlier today. (end)
