Germany stands against Ukraine becoming member of NATO

(MENAFN) A newspaper stated on Saturday, quoting NATO representatives that Germany is against providing Kiev a certain pathway or solid guarantees of becoming a part of the Western army bloc at a future conference in Lithuania.

“Berlin is stand-offish at the prospect of offering immediate membership… It wants a process and time to develop guarantees to essentially block membership,” an unknown source inside the army bloc informed the British outlet.

Germany is allegedly suspicious that Kiev would instantly summon Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which instructs that an assault against one NATO associate “shall be considered an attack against them all.”

In June, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that “we have to take a sober look at the current situation.” He claimed that even Ukrainian representatives confessed “that joining NATO is out of the question” for as long as the war with Russia is ongoing, and the Western bloc should concentrate on other ways to “support” Kiev.
