Omar bin Laden's Tweet Commemorating His Father's Death Sparks Outrage on Twitter

(MENAFN) A twitter account claiming to belong to Omar bin Laden, the son of Al-Qaeda's deceased founder, Osama bin Laden, has caused controversy by commemorating the anniversary of his father's death. On Tuesday, Omar tweeted to remember his father, saying that "history is only written with the blood of such people – to tell the stories of those martyrs who made history, built nations, and brought about glory. Their blood is the lifeline of our faith until the Day of Judgement. May you rest in peace."

The tweet has led to an outcry on social media, with many Arabs expressing outrage and condemning the crimes of Al-Qaeda and Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan, the Arab world, and around the globe. One Saudi user, Noor Alotaibi, responded directly to Omar's tweet, saying "your father was lost, and he led many astray. He has the blood of innocent people on his hands."

Under Twitter's rules, the "promotion of terrorism and violent extremism" is prohibited, and the platform claims that accounts by "individual perpetrators of terrorist, violent extremist, or mass violent attacks" will be removed, even if those individuals are not confirmed members of terrorist organizations. However, at the time of writing, Omar's tweet and account were still active on the platform.

Omar bin Laden has been known to have a controversial past. In 2010, he was stripped of his Saudi citizenship and deported from the country for his alleged connections to Al-Qaeda. Despite this, he has continued to express support for his father's ideology and legacy. In a 2016 interview with The Guardian, Omar claimed that he was in regular contact with his father up until the time of his death, and that he still believed in Al-Qaeda's goals.

The fact that Omar's tweet is still live on Twitter has led to criticism of the platform's enforcement policies, with some claiming that it is inconsistent and fails to adequately address the issue of promoting violent extremism. However, Twitter has stated that it is committed to removing content that violates its rules, and that it works to identify and remove accounts that promote terrorism.
