Doha, Qatar: Qatar Foundation held a ceremony to celebrate the participants and coaches of its Ability Friendly Programme – an initiative that offers inclusive sporting opportunities for individuals with different abilities.

The event, hosted by Qatari stand-up comedian and presenter Hamad Al Amari, aimed to raise awareness of the Qatar Foundation (QF) programme, which, this year, included 182 registered participants.

Mark Hughes, the Executive Director of Special schools and SEN Services at Qatar Foundation, said,“The Ability Friendly Programme is essential to QF's Pre-University Education. This programme not only provides valuable opportunities for individuals with different abilities but also strives to create an inclusive environment that embraces all participants, enhancing their deep sense of appreciation and community belonging.

“The programme also allows individuals to showcase their talents, boosting their confidence and self-esteem while developing social skills and helping participants form lasting relationships. Through various activities, it promotes independence and personal growth. By engaging participants in sports, it also fosters enthusiasm for an active and healthy lifestyle.

“I am incredibly proud of our students' achievements and their ability to overcome challenges. Their determination and resilience are truly inspiring, and they remind us all of the incredible potential within each of us.”

Maha Al Amri, mother of 10-year-old Khaled Al Yafie, who has Autism Spectrum Disorder and participates in the programme, said:“This event goes beyond just honouring the students; it also celebrates the tremendous efforts and continuous dedication of the parents. It's truly heartwarming to see our children's commitment and perseverance honoured in such a significant manner.

“There is a wonderful and supportive community of mothers here. We regularly meet and connect with each other, forming a strong and resilient network. These connections allow us to share our experiences, offer advice, and provide emotional support. This network has been invaluable, helping us navigate the challenges and celebrate the successes of our children's journeys together.”

Al Amiri spoke about her child's experience in the programme, saying:“My son has been enrolled in both the swimming and football programmes. Now, in his second year, I've noticed an improvement in his social skills. Team sports can be difficult for children with autism, but these programmes have helped him learn to interact and play with others.”

Fayza Abdullah Mohammad, mother of Fatima, a participant in the football programme, said:“Participating in the football-related activities has greatly benefited my daughter. It has helped her develop new skills.

“Before joining the programme, my daughter needed constant assistance with every activity. Now, she's learning to rely on herself. It has been wonderful to see her independence grow and feel a sense of achievement.

“Connecting with other parents here has been incredibly valuable. Their experiences have taught me patience and the importance of presenting our children to the world with confidence and pride. This community feels like one big family, where we encourage and support one another.”

Mohammed expressed her appreciation, saying,“I deeply value the dedication of the trainers and the thoughtful design of this programme. It has exceeded all my expectations and contributed to creating a supportive community that continues to grow. I am grateful for the positive impact it has had on our lives and the support and strength it provides for our children.”

The event also featured“Colorful Dreams,” a collection of drawings by twelve young artists from the Ability Friendly Programme printed on bags and books.
