St. Olaf College Student Charged After Suspicious Items Found in Dorm Room

(MENAFN) A 20-year-old student at St. Olaf College in southeastern Minnesota, Waylon Kurts, has been charged with conspiracy to commit second-degree assault and threats of violence after authorities found several items in his dorm room that were deemed suspicious by school officials. The charges filed on Monday reveal that the items discovered by the authorities included knives, a tactical vest, empty ammunition and magazine boxes, a tactical knife, a folding knife, firearm earmuffs, fireworks, lighter fluid, six propane canisters, a battery with wires, and a lock pick set.

The Police also confiscated notebooks from Kurts' dorm room, which contained writings related to a plot to steal ammunition from a retailer, police radio frequencies, and a hand-drawn map of the recreational facility on campus. The map included an arrow indicating a travel route and an apparent exit path.

Kurts' attorney, Paul Rogosheske, has defended his client, claiming that while Kurts may have had some items that looked suspicious, there was nothing that posed a threat to anyone. Rogosheske explained that Kurts is an avid hunter who shoots frequently, and that there were no guns or ammunition taken from Kurts' room or vehicle. Furthermore, Rogosheske stated that Kurts drew the map for someone else.

The incident has raised concerns about campus safety and the potential for violence on college campuses. It serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilant monitoring of suspicious behavior and the need for quick action to prevent potential threats from escalating. The charges against Kurts highlight the seriousness with which authorities take any indications of threats or violence, and the consequences that can result from such behavior.
