(MENAFN) Efforts are underway to establish an extended truce in Yemen, following a meeting between the head of the country's presidential council and Saudi Arabia's Defense Minister. An official from the Yemeni government revealed that a roadmap for Political peace has been agreed upon, which includes three phases. The first phase involves opening sea, land, and air ports, securing the Saudi borders, paying public servant salaries, unifying banks, and swapping all prisoners. The second phase includes Yemeni-Yemeni talks, while the third phase involves a comprehensive political process leading to elections under the UN's supervision.
This development comes after Yemen's internationally recognized government announced that the Saudi-led coalition supporting it has lifted wartime restrictions on shipments to the import-reliant country. The restrictions were put in place due to the ongoing conflict between the government and Iran-backed Houthi rebels. The latter had seized control of the capital, Sanaa, in 2014, leading to the Saudi-led coalition's intervention the following year. Yemeni Deputy Youth Minister Hamzah Al Kamaly confirmed that a Saudi delegation would be traveling to Sanaa for further talks, which aim to cement the truce.
