Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister to engage in talks with Iran

(MENAFN) Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, has expressed that his country is willing to engage in talks with Iran. He added that the current form of the nuclear agreement with Iran is not ideal and needs to address the concerns of neighboring countries. Iran has had five rounds of talks with Saudi Arabia with the mediation of Iraq.

Prince Farhan also stated that increased engagement with Syria may pave the way for its return to the Arab League after over a decade of isolation. Iran has welcomed gestures by Arab countries to reopen ties with Syria. The Saudi foreign Minister emphasized that isolating Syria has not worked and that dialogue with Damascus is needed, particularly to address its humanitarian situation, though it is too early to discuss its return to the Arab League.

When Algeria hosted the first Arab League summit since 2019, Damascus stayed away after Algeria failed to persuade other Arab states to end Syria's suspension. Saudi Arabia will host this year's Arab League summit, and Prince Farhan said that it is too early to talk about whether Syria would be welcome. However, he highlighted that there is a consensus building in the Arab world that the status quo is not sustainable and that a way must be found to move beyond it.
