Russia conducts air defense exercises on Kuril Islands amid territorial dispute with Japan

(MENAFN) On Monday, Russia announced that it had carried out air defense exercises on the Kuril Islands in Sakhalin Oblast region. As part of the training, missile launches against air targets were conducted, with the S-300V4 air defense systems successfully intercepting all targets upon entering the affected area, the Eastern Military District said.

The Kuril Islands are at the center of a territorial dispute between Russia and Japan, as Japan has refused to sign a peace treaty with Russia since World War II. The Soviet Union had taken over the Kuril Islands after Japan's surrender in World War II, but Japan never accepted Russia's claim over the islands. Due to the territorial dispute, the two countries have not signed a peace treaty, which has kept them technically at war.

The question of the sovereignty of the Kuril Islands remains unresolved due to both countries claiming the territory. The exercises are seen as a signal from Russia to reinforce its military presence in the region and assert its territorial claims.
