Ennahda in Tunisia denounces widespread mistreatment of critics in midst of political crisis

(MENAFN) In the midst of a protracted Political crisis, Tunisia's Ennahda movement on Tuesday denounced what it called the systemic harassment of critics in the North African nation.

Both the director of Mosaique radio and the leader of Ennahda, Noureddine Bhiri, were taken into custody on Monday by Tunisian security forces.

Ennahda “strongly condemns the abductions and the systematic abuse of critics of Kais Saied’s coup and every free media voice…and demands the release of all those detained outside the framework of the law,” according to the movement's statement.

According to the statement, the increased intimidation of opposition individuals "is evidence of the lack of direction and inability to confront the crises created by the coup." On the other hand, the Tunisian authorities did not respond to Ennahda's claims. Abdelhamid Jelassi, a former leader of Ennahda, was arrested by Tunisian police on Saturday after they suspected him of plotting against the nation’s security.

Since President Saied overthrew the government and dissolved parliament in 2021, Tunisia has been mired in a protracted political crisis that has worsened the economy of the nation.
