Austrian food costs continue to soar by 15.7 percent


(MENAFN) The national statistics office stated on Monday that food costs in Austria have continued to skyrocket, increasing by an average of 15.7 percent over the past month.

The organization reports that as compared to the same month last year, sales of food and non-alcoholic drinks increased by 16.1% in December. Particularly for milk, cheese, and eggs, price pressure grew, rising by 24 percent annually. Additionally, substantially costlier in December was meat, whose price increased 18.1 percent from the previous year. Vegetables had an increase of 14.9 percent, while bread and grains rose by 16.1 percent. Oils and fats cost consumers 28.6 percent higher, including 33.2 percent more for butter. Data indicated that fruit costs increased by 4.4 percent as well.

Austria's consumption index for December was 116.1 percentage points (the count is being compared with the base data from 2020).

According to Statistics Austria, consumer prices in Austria increased by an average of 8.6 percent last year, which is the largest yearly increase since 1975 and more than three times the inflation rate for 2021.
