Doha International Family Institute (DIFI) has launched an advocacy campaign calling for mandatory premarital education programmes for those about to get married.
The campaign 'Plan & Prepare' aims at educating youth about the importance of building happy, healthy and long-lasting relationships within the Qatari society.
The campaign was launched recently based on regional and international best practices as well as assessment of similar programmes and after analysing official statistics on divorce rates in Qatar, said officials during the launch event held at Multaqa (Student Center) in Education City.
In a presentation during the event, Executive Director at DIFI, Dr. Sharifa Noaman Al Emadi pointed that according to data by the Planning and Statistics Authority, 42.1% of divorces occur within the first year of marriage; 58.2% within 1 to 4 years and 22.1 % of divorces happen before consummation. In contrast, 8% of divorce rates happen between 5-9 years of marriage, which are average rates in comparison to international and regional rates.
A study by DIFI conducted in collaboration with the“League of Arab States” has analysed marital relationships in the first five years of marriage in the Arab world. The study has indicated that incompatibility, difference in personalities, financial and economic burdens and parent's intervention were among the reasons for early marital breakdown.
At an interactive session during the event DIFI's partners and guests discussed the importance of supporting and advocating for 'Plan & Prepare' campaign, and on how various countries around the world have addressed increasing divorce rates.
Director of Family and Research Policy at DIFI, Dr. Khalid Al Naama, speaking to media on the sidelines of the 'Plan & Prepare' campaign launch said,“This campaign is part of our advocacy initiative to raise awareness in the community in Qatar about the importance of family cohesion and reduce the divorce rates.”
He said that the campaign also aims to address the causes of marital disputes and educate young people about managing conflicts and lead happy and stable marriages. “So there will be an overall positive impact,” said Dr. Al Naama.
About methods of implementing the campaign Dr. Al Naama said,“We talk to allies, decisionmakers. We provide them with some policy brief and present them with tools adopted by neighbouring countries to protect families.”
He also said that social media influencers will be creating awareness among young people about positive approaches to protect marriages.
