Russian nuclear leader cautions of total infiltration

(MENAFN) According to the commander of Russia's Strategic Missile Forces (SMF), the RS-28 Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) can pierce any present or future anti-missile systems.

General Sergey Karakaev stated in an interview with Krasnaya Zvezda (Red Star), the official newspaper of the Russian military, “The missile system Sarmat has a wide range of capabilities for deploying various types of combat payloads and is based on principles that assure guaranteed penetration of any anti-ballistic missile (ABM) system, both now and in the future.”

In April, the liquid-fueled heavy ICBM launched successfully for the first time. It is intended to replace the outdated R-36M2 Voevoda missiles as the backbone of the SMF's silo-based component of Russian nuclear deterrent.

Sarmat “is superior to Voevoda in many characteristics. Its short boost phase allows earlier separation of the warheads and makes detection of the launching missile for subsequent interception much harder,” Karakaev clarified.

Meanwhile, the general claims that its energy capabilities enable for the deployment of a broader spectrum of weapons and countermeasures. According to him, this improvement "nullifies" the capabilities of present and future interceptors.
