Minister resigns in protest over new gender-changing regulations

(MENAFN) The Scottish government has successfully pushed through new gender legislation, leading the country's community safety Minister to resign. The measure was introduced by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon's Scottish National Party (SNP).

The Gender Recognition Reform bill, which passed its first reading in parliament on Thursday, intends to make it simpler for people to legally alter their gender by eliminating the need for any type of medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria. It also shortens the period an applicant must live with an acquired gender from two years to three months, and it lowers the allowable age from 18 to 16.

Ash Regan, the SNP's community safety minister, resigned moments before the legislation was to be voted on. She added that after "seriously examining" the topic of gender recognition, her "conscience" would not enable her to vote in favor of the measure with the Scottish government.

Regan stated she was “not against reform per se,” but stressed that she could not support measures that may have “negative implications for the safety and dignity of women and girls,” as cited by the British media.
