Dow Jones end at worst rate of 2022 as main US shares drop more than 1.6 percent


(MENAFN) The Dow Jones ended Friday at its worst rate of this year as main indexes in the US share market fell more than 1.6 percent following the Federal Reserve's third 75 basis points rate hike in a row on Wednesday.

The blue-chip Dow fell 486 points, or 1.62 percent, to close the week at 29,590 -- its worst closing rate for this year.

The S&P 500 dropped 64 points, or 1.72 percent, to end at 2,693.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq lost 198 points, or 1.8 percent, to finish at 11,867.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, surged 9.4 percent to 29.92m, whereas the 10-year US Treasury yield decreased 0.6 percent to 3.687 percent.

The dollar index increased 1.4 percent to 112.97, a fresh 20-year peak; whereas the euro dropped 1.45 percent USD0.9693 versus the dollar.

Precious metals were on the decrease with gold losing 1.6 percent to USD1,643, and silver losing 3.8 percent to USD18.89.
