A significant number of high school and graduate students made up the bulk of visitors to the just concluded third edition of University expo Qatar.

Over 40 local and international universities from seven countries, including Qatar, the USA, the UK, Canada, Hungary, Australia and Cyprus, showcased their academic programmes. All universities are approved by Qatar's Ministry of Education and Higher Education.

The two-day event organised by Informa Tharawat also hosted Overseas Higher Educational Consultants in Qatar, the British Council and EducationUSA Center at the US Embassy in Doha, and Bayt, a leading job site in the MENA region. Students can avail the best international and local universities and programmes to apply to, talk to university representatives and inquire about admissions, scholarships, and career prospects.

Prospective students were also treated to career choice sessions and how to choose a course of study.

Participating institutions included Qatar University, the University of Doha for Science and Technology, the University of Swansea, the University of Portsmouth, Northumbria University, the University of Waterloo, Western University and many more.

Several university agents told The Peninsula that the Expo had been a success as they interacted with budding high school students. It was also gathered that Medicine, Information Technology, and Cybersecurity were the most inquired programmes, while UK universities were visibly more attractive to students.

“We have seen several students with their parents since the opening day. Many of them are more interested in studying medicine and are also a bit worried about the process for IELTS and when they can take the exams,” a higher education consultant told The Peninsula.

Despite being an expo for prospective students, it also served as a platform for undergraduates to scope potential job opportunities.

A first-year university student told The Peninsula that he aspires to open his IT firm after graduating.

The engineering student said he visited the job site counters to inquire about the latest trends in the IT sector as he prepares for the challenges ahead.

On the other hand, several parents said the expo gives them choices and ensures their involvement in the children's decision process.

A parent stressed that the one-on-one interaction with officials from these institutions paints a clearer picture than online communication.
