Barshim To Lead Qatar's Charge At Eugene Worlds

Doha: World champion high jumper Mutaz Essa Barshim will lead Qatari challenge at the World Athletics Championships Oregon22 which will take place in Eugene, United States from July 15-24.

The Tokyo Olympic gold medallist, Barshim had already qualified for this year's Worlds after receiving a wild card as the defending champion. Barshim clinched the world title at the Khalifa International Stadium in 2019 when he delivered the gold medal for the hosts with a leap of 2.37 metres.

Joining the 31-year-old in Eugene will be the Doha 2019 bronze winning one lap hurdler Abderrahman Samba, sprint sensation Femi Ogunode and middle distance runner Musab Adam Ali.

Samba booked his place in the Worlds after his time of 47.12 secs in the Tokyo Games 400m hurdles final was ranked fifth fastest at the end of the qualifying period, which ended on Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, four-time Asian champion Femi Ogunode will represent Qatar in two events. 

The two-time Asian 100m champion's time of 10.02 secs which he achieved at the National Stadium during the Tokyo Games, was ranked 26th at the end of the qualifying deadline. In the men's 200m standings, Ogunode was placed 21st for his time of 20.16 secs which he clocked in Doha on June 29, 2021.

The 1,500m runner Musab achieved the qualifying mark at the Olympiastadion in Stockholm, Sweden on July 4, last year when he clocked a time of 3:34.76 during the Bauhaus-galan Meeting.

Apart from the individual competitions, Qatar are also eligible to field men's 4x400m and 4x100m relay teams at the Eugene Worlds. 

Around 1900 athletes from 75 countries have qualified to compete at the World Athletics Championships, the governing body of the sport announced yesterday after the qualification period closed on Tuesday.

According to the World Athletics website the athletes have qualified to compete at the World Championships, either by entry standard or world ranking position within a discipline's quota.

Wild card entries are offered to all individual winners from the World Athletics Championships Doha 2019, along with the winners of the 2021 Wanda Diamond League and Combined Events Challenge.

About 63 percent of athletes have qualified by entry standard, 33 percent by world ranking position and four percent by designated finishes in qualifying competitions (such as area championships). 

Member federations are expected to submit their final selections before July 4.
