São Paulo – Saudi Arabia's Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC ) will open six desalination plants by 2024, SWCC governor Abdullah Al-Abdul-Karim said in an interview with Arab News on the sidelines of a desalination conference earlier this week in Jeddah. Two plants will be launched by late 2022.

Karim revealed that these plants will be established across various cities of Saudi Arabia, including Al-Shuqaiq, Al-Shoaiba, Jubail, and Alkhobar. SWCC is a state-owned company that operates seawater desalination plants in the country. The company aims to be a global leader in water desalination.

The plants will focus on a low power consumption. Each plant will have a power consumption of less than 1.7 kilowatts per cubic meter, which will reduce the cost of water production from SAR 1.54 (USD 0.42) per cubic meter to SAR 1.3 (USD 0.35) per cubic meter.“With production at such minimum cost, it will increase the sector's contribution to the national gross domestic product (GDP),” he said.

Karim revealed that the Saudi water desalination industry is planning to reduce its carbon emissions by 65% by 2024, equaling 35 million tons of carbon dioxide, thus following Saudi Arabia's environmental plan. SWCC is also moving from conventional energy sources toward advanced and efficient systems to power these desalination plants, which will fuel their plan to become carbon neutral by 2060

During the interview with Arab News on the sidelines of the Innovation Driven Desalination conference, the executive added that innovation is necessary to make water“affordable, abundant, and accessible.” He said that we need to let innovation impact the desalination industry to reduce the cost, increase efficiency, improve financial sustainability, and impact the economy and living standards. He invited innovative companies worldwide to come and join hands with the firm.

Arab News said that, according to a report released by SWCC, Saudi Arabia's production of desalinated water amounts to more than 7.9 million cubic meters per day, which represents 55% of the Gulf region and 22.2% of the global desalination.
