President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has told Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa that he will not reverse the decision to appoint Ranil Wickremesinghe as Prime Minister.

Responding to a letter sent by Premadasa, the President said that the post was initially offered to Premadasa but he had rejected it.

The President had also recalled that Premadasa had told reporters that he will not accept the Prime Minister post as long as he (Gotabaya Rajapaksa) is President.

President Goatabaya Rajapaksa said that he offered Ranil Wickremesinghe the post after discussing the matter with other political parties.

Premadasa had written to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa today accepting an earlier invitation to be appointed Prime Minister and form a Cabinet.

He told reporters today the decision to form a Government was taken after extensive discussions.

The Opposition Leader said that the offer to join an interim Government is tied to some conditions.

The conditions are that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa must step down within a stipulated time frame, he must not hamper the activities of the New Government, he must agree to abolish the Executive Presidency and once the situation in the country stabilises the people must be given an opportunity to form a new Government.

Premadasa's offer to accept the post of Prime Minister came hours after it was reported that the Prime Minister post had been offered to United National Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe. (Colombo Gazette)
