The Qatari football fraternity was in mourning Saturday after former Qatari national team player Adel al-Mulla passed away in London.
The Qatar Football Association (QFA) said on its official Twitter handle that the 51-year-old had died of a heart attack.
The QFA said in its Twitter post:“The Qatar Football Association mourns the loss of Adel al-Mulla, a former national team player, who passed away after a heart attack. May his soul rest in peace. May Allah bless his family with patience to bear this irreparable loss. We all belong to God and to Him we shall return.”
Al-Mulla, who had travelled to London a few days ago, leaves behind a lasting legacy as a football player and broadcaster following his retirement.
He played for Al Arabi FC before switching to Al Khor and Al Rayyan. He later returned to Al Arabi until he retired from the game.
He scored Qatar's historic goal that helped the national side defeat Japan on the way to qualifying for the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992.
Qatari dignitaries, organisations and football players Saturday took to the social media to grieve the loss, while calling him 'a courageous player'.
HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, tweeted: 'May God have mercy on our former national team player, Adel al-Mulla, and accept him in the highest paradise. Our condolences to his honourable family. We belong to God and to Him we shall return.'
Salah al-Mulla, head of football at Al Arabi FC, said it was big shock to learn about the passing of al-Mulla.
The Al Arabi FC management - from the president to other officials - all took to social media to express their condolences.
The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, too, tweeted expressing condolences.
Al-Mulla remains will be flown to Doha in the coming hours. The details of the funeral prayers and burial will be announced later, it is learnt.
