To create and exchange journalistic content for further boosting friendly relations between the two countries and peoples, The Peninsula yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with The Korea Herald.
The MoU was signed on the sidelines of 20th edition of Doha Forum by Jaber Salem Al Harami, Deputy CEO of Dar Al Sharq Group, and Dr. Sanjay Kumar from The Korea Herald on behalf of Choi Jin-Young, CEO of the Korean newspaper.
Under the MoU on cooperation in the field of media, both newspapers will discuss and exchange areas of media cooperation in order to raise awareness, as well as to increase inter-awareness over the contents of the two newspapers.
Within the framework of this MoU, the two dailies will also cooperate in the following areas: Exchange of contents as mutually agreed upon between the parties; and sharing and covering news, interviews and events organised by The Peninsula and The Korea Herald.
There will also be co-hosting of events in case of particular and significant importance, based on mutual agreement between the two. Speaking on the occasion, Al Harami said this was a very important initiative in strengthening relations of local media with other countries of the world.“The initiative with South Korean newspaper opens new horizon of news reporting about Qatar including political, economic and sports, as many events are taking place here.”
He added:“The exchange of visits to media organisations will provide experiences and help in building good relations among journalists. It will further boost the relations of Qatar with South Korea in media sector like a number of other sectors.”
Dr. Khalid Al-Shafi, Editor-in-Chief of The Peninsula, said this agreement is a valued addition to the achievements of The Peninsula newspaper, the number one English daily in Qatar.
The Peninsula Editor-in-Chief said:“The choice of The Peninsula by The Korea Herald for cooperation through signing of this MoU is an evidence of the leading position of the newspaper in Qatar and the region as a source of various news and opinions. This MoU will open new horizons for The Peninsula and its readers to access more East and South Asian news stories, and both parties will be able to exchange information and experiences.”
Dr. Khalid Al-Shafi further said the agreement also responds to the newspaper's global vision and its focus on local news that will be transmitted through one of the largest and the most widely-read Korean newspapers — The Korea Herald.“There is no doubt that this agreement will also enable the readers of The Korea Herald to get acquainted with the State of Qatar, its culture and the role the country plays in the fields of diplomacy and economy at the regional and global levels.”
Talking to The Peninsula, Dr. Sanjay Kumar said that through the MoU, The Korea Hearld will create awareness about Qatar and Middle East as a whole.“In Korean media, the Middle Eat is seen as a business hub and a land of many opportunities. Many Korean companies are also operating in Qatar but the cultural aspects and other dynamics of the Middle East are not well-known in Korea. I think through this MoU, we can exchange contents that can create that awareness.”
He said that the pact will enhance people-to-people contacts between the two countries and both media houses will also co-organise some events to promote cultural, sports events like the upcoming Qatar 2022.
“Through this cooperation, aspects of Qatari culture will reach Korean audience and vice versa. This MoU has a comprehensive outreach. During high level visits between the two countries, we will conduct interviews, develop news stories, features as well as share videos. We can also translate The Peninsula content into Korean language for our Herald Business newspaper which is a Korean language daily.”
