Dhaka: Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and Bucharest Sector 3 Mayor Robert Sorin Negoita signed a memorandum of understanding in the Mayor Hanif Auditorium at the Nagar Bhaban in Dhaka on March 15.

The agreement, under which Bucharest will be Dhaka's first sister city, will facilitate the expansion of the tourism industry, cultural exchange, technical, information and technology exchange for the removal of traffic congestion and modern waste management, expansion of trade and industries and the flow of investment in the two cities, said a press release.

At the event, DSCC mayor Taposh said,“We have many establishments like Lalbagh Fort, Ahsan Manzil, Tara Masjid, Central Shaheed Minar and others that can play an important role in attracting tourists. Besides, diverse cultural festivals, traditional foods and people's cordiality are enough to enthral local and foreign tourists.”

He believed that the agreement would expand the country's tourism sector.

While the concept of sister cities is conventional in many countries across the globe, the initiative has been taken for the first time in Bangladesh, Taposh said, adding,“The memorandum signing of the sister cities unveiled another new horizon.”

He said that the agreement would increase the relationship of the two countries and play a role in expanding economic areas.

Bucharest Sector 3 mayor Robert Sorin Negoita said,“We hope that the agreement would create opportunities for employment, business and tourism for two cities. It will also increase communication among the people of both countries.”

DSCC Chief Executive Officer Farid Ahmed and its Secretary Akramuzzaman, among others, were also present at the event.
