AQABA — A total of 600,000 Jordanian families risk having their electricity bills tripled if they do not register on a new electricity tariff platform, according to Mohammad Al Rousan, director of Costs and Pricing at the energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC).

Rousan told The Jordan Times that the number of people registered on the platform is approximately 900,000. According to the EMRC, the new electricity tariff will come into effect on the first of April.

EMRC spokesperson Tahreer Al Qaq stressed the need for Jordanians to register for the electricity subsidy, warning of high electricity bills for the month of April if not registered on the platform.

“The platform will remain open for Jordanians to register after the first of April; we encourage everyone sign up to avoid high electricity bills, as the current tariff will be cancelled. Whoever does not register for the subsidy will be subject to the new unsupported tariff,” Qaq told The Jordan Times.

Qaq pointed out that households that consume 300 kilowatts per month, which represents 58 per cent of the total meters in the Kingdom, will have their electricity bill increased from 13JD to 36JD, and households consuming 600 kilowatts per month, which is 93 per cent of Jordanians, will see an increase from 43JD to 72JD.
